Summary

Oxytocin can cause hypotension with reflex tachycardia, and high doses may cause arrhythmias or ischemic changes, while dobutamine also increases heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand. Together they may add to hemodynamic and arrhythmic stress, and oxytocin has been reported to potentiate pressor effects of vasoconstrictors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Dobutamine and Oxytocin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Dobutamine belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxytocin belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive cardiovascular effects through different pharmacodynamic pathways.

What to do

Monitor ECG, heart rate and blood pressure continuously when both are given, and use the lowest effective oxytocin dose and dobutamine rate.
