For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Eluxadoline inhibits breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) and may raise systemic exposure to methotrexate, which is a BCRP substrate. Higher methotrexate levels could increase myelosuppression, mucositis and hepatic or renal toxicity, particularly with higher methotrexate doses.

What this interaction means in plain words

Eluxadoline and Methotrexate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Eluxadoline belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Methotrexate belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Eluxadoline inhibits BCRP-mediated efflux, which reduces methotrexate elimination and increases its exposure.

What to do

Monitor complete blood count, renal and liver function and signs of methotrexate toxicity when starting eluxadoline. Reduce the methotrexate dose if toxicity appears, especially with high-dose regimens.

What to ask your pharmacist
