What this interaction means in plain words
Cyclosporin and Eluxadoline can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Cyclosporin belongs to Miscellaneous; Eluxadoline belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Cyclosporine inhibits hepatic OATP1B1 uptake of eluxadoline, increasing systemic concentrations.
What to do
Reduce eluxadoline to 75 mg twice daily if coadministration is needed. Monitor for pancreatitis symptoms, constipation and sedation, or choose an alternative agent.
