Summary
Entacapone inhibits COMT, one of the enzymes that breaks down epinephrine. This may prolong and amplify the cardiovascular effects of epinephrine, such as tachycardia, arrhythmia and hypertension.
What this interaction means in plain words
Entacapone and Epinephrine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Entacapone belongs to Central Nervous System; Epinephrine belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
COMT inhibition by entacapone reduces the metabolic inactivation of epinephrine.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure when epinephrine is given. Use the lowest effective epinephrine dose and be prepared to reduce it.
What to ask your pharmacist
