Summary
Salsalate may reduce the blood pressure lowering effect of eplerenone and may impair renal function. In patients with reduced kidney function it can add to the risk of hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eplerenone and Salsalate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces sodium excretion and renal blood flow.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, especially in older patients or those with CKD. Use the lowest effective salsalate dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
