Why it happens

NSAIDs reduce vasodilatory renal prostaglandins, so with angiotensin receptor blockade glomerular filtration falls and potassium handling is impaired.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure, creatinine and potassium after starting or changing therapy and maintain hydration. Avoid in dehydrated or renally impaired patients where possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
