Summary
NSAIDs can blunt the antihypertensive effect of angiotensin receptor blockers and, together, may impair renal function, particularly in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Ketoprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Ketoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces afferent arteriolar dilation while ARBs dilate the efferent arteriole, lowering glomerular filtration and potassium excretion.
What to do
Ensure hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, especially at initiation. Use the lowest ketoprofen dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
