Summary
Oxaprozin may reduce the blood pressure lowering effect of eprosartan and, in combination with an angiotensin receptor blocker, can impair renal function and raise potassium. The risk is highest in elderly, volume-depleted or renally impaired patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Oxaprozin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Eprosartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAIDs block vasodilatory renal prostaglandins while ARBs dilate the efferent arteriole, reducing glomerular filtration; both also favor hyperkalemia.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and monitor serum creatinine, potassium and blood pressure after starting. Avoid or limit NSAID use in at-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
