Summary
Sulindac can blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of eprosartan and raises the risk of renal function deterioration, particularly in older or volume-depleted patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Sulindac can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Sulindac belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces glomerular perfusion and promotes sodium retention while the ARB dilates the efferent arteriole.
What to do
Monitor creatinine, potassium and blood pressure after initiation and periodically, and keep patients hydrated. Avoid the combination in volume-depleted or renally impaired patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
