Summary
Androgen deprivation therapy such as histrelin can prolong the QT interval, and erythromycin also prolongs QT. Combined use may increase the risk of torsade de pointes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Erythromycin and Histrelin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Erythromycin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Histrelin belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation from erythromycin ion-channel blockade and GnRH agonist-induced androgen suppression.
What to do
Check baseline ECG and electrolytes, and correct hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia. Choose a non-QT-prolonging antibiotic if the patient has other cardiac risk factors.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
