What this interaction means in plain words

Escitalopram and Gilteritinib can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Escitalopram belongs to Central Nervous System; Gilteritinib belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QTc prolongation, with possible pharmacodynamic receptor-level interference with gilteritinib.

What to do

Consider an alternative antidepressant during gilteritinib therapy; if combined, monitor ECG and electrolytes and respond to QTc prolongation per gilteritinib guidance.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
