Summary
Irinotecan is activated to SN-38 and also inactivated by CYP3A4, and inducers have been shown to reduce exposure to irinotecan and SN-38 with conventional formulations. Eslicarbazepine may therefore reduce efficacy of liposomal irinotecan.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eslicarbazepine and Irinotecan liposomal can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
CYP3A4 induction by eslicarbazepine increases oxidative metabolism of irinotecan to inactive metabolites.
What to do
Prefer a non-inducing antiseizure drug; if combined, monitor tumor response.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
