Summary
Esmolol blocks beta-1 receptors and, at higher doses, beta-2 receptors, which can reduce the bronchodilator effect of pirbuterol. In patients with asthma or COPD this may precipitate bronchospasm.
What this interaction means in plain words
Esmolol and Pirbuterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism at beta-adrenergic receptors.
What to do
Monitor respiratory status and response to pirbuterol if esmolol is needed; avoid esmolol in patients with significant reactive airway disease where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
