Summary
MMR contains live attenuated viruses that may replicate excessively in patients receiving TNF blockade. This raises the risk of disseminated vaccine-strain infection. The vaccine response may also be impaired.
What this interaction means in plain words
Etanercept and Measles mumps and rubella vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
TNF inhibition weakens immune control of live attenuated viruses.
What to do
Do not give MMR during etanercept treatment. Vaccinate at least 4 weeks before starting etanercept, or defer until after drug discontinuation and washout.
