Summary

Exenatide slows gastric emptying, which can delay or reduce absorption of oral drugs such as contraceptives. Estrogen-containing contraceptives may also modestly impair glucose tolerance, partly opposing the glucose-lowering effect of exenatide.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone and Exenatide injectable can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Delayed gastric emptying from exenatide alters oral absorption, and estrogen-induced insulin resistance antagonizes glycemic control.

What to do

Take the contraceptive at least one hour before exenatide and monitor glycemic control, adjusting antidiabetic therapy as required.

What to ask your pharmacist
