Summary

Combined hormonal contraceptives raise the risk of venous thromboembolism and tranexamic acid is antifibrinolytic, so together the thrombotic risk is increased. Oral tranexamic acid labeling contraindicates its use with combined hormonal contraception.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone and Tranexamic acid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive prothrombotic effects from estrogen-induced coagulation changes and antifibrinolysis.
