Summary
Drospirenone tends to raise potassium while levalbuterol, a beta-2 agonist, shifts potassium into cells and can lower serum levels. The effects partly oppose one another and no clinically meaningful problem is expected at usual doses. Higher or repeated levalbuterol doses can cause hypokalemia regardless of the contraceptive.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone and Levalbuterol have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Opposing effects on serum potassium: drospirenone antimineralocorticoid retention versus beta-2 mediated intracellular potassium shift.
What to do
No routine action is needed at standard doses. Check potassium if high-dose or frequent levalbuterol is used, or in patients with renal impairment.
