Summary
Voriconazole raises plasma concentrations of ethinyl estradiol and also of levonorgestrel-type progestins, and the contraceptive can in turn modestly raise voriconazole levels. Increased estrogen exposure may cause nausea, headache, breast tenderness and a greater thrombotic burden, and azole-related adverse effects may also be more frequent.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ethinyl estradiol-levonorgestrel and Voriconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ethinyl estradiol-levonorgestrel belongs to Endocrine; Voriconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Voriconazole inhibits CYP3A4 (and CYP2C19), reducing the metabolism of the hormones, with possible reciprocal effects on voriconazole.
What to do
Monitor for estrogen-related adverse effects such as nausea, headache and hypertension, and for voriconazole toxicity including visual disturbance and hepatotoxicity. Consider a lower-estrogen or non-hormonal method if these occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
