Summary
Fluoxetine impairs platelet aggregation through serotonin depletion, and with flurbiprofen the risk of upper GI bleeding is increased. Fluoxetine also inhibits CYP2C9 and may modestly raise flurbiprofen exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluoxetine and Flurbiprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fluoxetine belongs to Central Nervous System; Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive platelet dysfunction with NSAID mucosal injury, and fluoxetine inhibition of CYP2C9-mediated flurbiprofen metabolism.
What to do
Consider a proton pump inhibitor for patients at elevated GI risk and use the lowest effective flurbiprofen dose. Monitor for signs of bleeding and NSAID adverse effects.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
