Summary

Flurazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine hypnotic and haloperidol also causes sedation. Combined use increases drowsiness, impaired coordination and cognitive slowing, with a greater risk of falls and confusion in older adults.

What this interaction means in plain words

Flurazepam and Haloperidol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression through GABA-A potentiation by flurazepam and central dopamine and histamine blockade by haloperidol.

What to do

Use the lowest effective dose of each drug and monitor for oversedation and falls, particularly in elderly patients. Consider a shorter-acting hypnotic if combined therapy is needed.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
