Summary
Sparsentan, an endothelin and angiotensin receptor antagonist, reduces glomerular pressure, and NSAIDs reduce renal prostaglandin-dependent perfusion. Together they may worsen renal function and may blunt blood pressure control.
What this interaction means in plain words
Flurbiprofen and Sparsentan can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Flurbiprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Sparsentan belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
NSAID-mediated afferent arteriolar constriction combined with angiotensin/endothelin receptor blockade reduces glomerular filtration pressure.
What to do
Avoid regular NSAID use with sparsentan where possible; if needed, monitor serum creatinine, potassium and blood pressure and maintain hydration.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
