Summary
Transdermal selegiline at antidepressant doses inhibits MAO-A and MAO-B, and combining it with an SSRI can cause serotonin syndrome and hypertensive reactions. Labeling contraindicates SSRIs with this product.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluvoxamine and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Nonselective MAO inhibition by selegiline combined with serotonin reuptake inhibition causes excess serotonin.
What to do
Do not combine; stop fluvoxamine at least 1 to 2 weeks before starting transdermal selegiline and allow at least 2 weeks after stopping selegiline before starting fluvoxamine.
What to ask your pharmacist
