Summary
Both formoterol and the loop diuretic torsemide can lower serum potassium. Together they may produce clinically important hypokalemia, which increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, especially with digoxin or QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Formoterol and Torsemide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Formoterol belongs to Respiratory; Torsemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from beta-2 mediated intracellular potassium shift and loop diuretic renal potassium loss.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium periodically and replace as needed, particularly at the start of therapy or with higher doses.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
