Drug interactions
amiodarone + torsemide
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Loop diuretic–induced hypokalemia/hypomagnesemia increases risk of QT prolongation and torsades de pointes with amiodarone.
Mechanism of action
Additive pharmacodynamic effect: electrolyte depletion (K/Mg) from loop diuretic potentiates amiodarone’s QT‑prolonging effect.
Clinical management
Avoid significant hypokalemia/hypomagnesemia; monitor and replete K/Mg (target K>4, Mg>2), monitor ECG if risk/symptoms, consider K-sparing agent or supplementation, review other QT‑prolonging drugs.
