Drug interactions
furosemide + insulin
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Loop diuretics may worsen glycemic control and, with insulin, increase risk of hypokalemia; dose adjustments and electrolyte monitoring may be needed.
Mechanism of action
Furosemide increases renal potassium/magnesium loss and may raise blood glucose; insulin shifts potassium intracellularly, together predisposing to hypokalemia and altered insulin requirements.
Clinical management
Monitor serum potassium and blood glucose at baseline and periodically; supplement potassium if needed; adjust insulin dose based on SMBG/A1c; consider ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac disease.
