Summary

Both drugs can damage the cochlea, and loop diuretics given with cisplatin increase the risk of hearing loss and tinnitus, which may be permanent. Furosemide can also worsen cisplatin-related nephrotoxicity through volume depletion and electrolyte loss.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cisplatin and Furosemide can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Cisplatin belongs to Oncology; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive ototoxicity affecting cochlear hair cells and the stria vascularis, plus additive renal and electrolyte effects.

What to do

Avoid routine concurrent use where possible and use furosemide only when needed for hydration-related volume overload. Obtain audiometry and monitor renal function, magnesium and potassium.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
