Summary
Salsalate is hydrolysed to salicylic acid and, like other NSAID-type agents, may diminish furosemide's diuretic effect and increase renal risk in volume-depleted patients. Salicylate toxicity such as tinnitus may be more likely at high doses with reduced renal clearance.
What this interaction means in plain words
Furosemide and Salsalate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Prostaglandin synthesis inhibition causing sodium retention, plus competition for renal tubular secretion of organic acids.
What to do
Monitor weight, edema, blood pressure and serum creatinine. Use the lowest effective salsalate dose and watch for salicylate toxicity.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
