Summary
Triclofos is metabolized to trichloroethanol, like chloral hydrate. Chloral hydrate given with intravenous furosemide has caused sweating, flushing and blood pressure changes, thought to be due to displacement of thyroid hormone binding or a hypermetabolic state. The reaction is transient and uncommon.
What this interaction means in plain words
Furosemide and Triclofos can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Proposed protein-binding displacement and altered vasomotor response; the mechanism is not firmly established.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and symptoms if used together, especially with intravenous furosemide, and consider another sedative if reactions occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
