Summary

Propafenone inhibits CYP2D6, which partly metabolizes galantamine, so galantamine levels may increase. Cholinergic effects such as bradycardia, nausea and vomiting may become more prominent, and bradycardia is relevant with an antiarrhythmic.

What this interaction means in plain words

Galantamine and Propafenone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Galantamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Propafenone belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Propafenone inhibition of CYP2D6 metabolism of galantamine.

What to do

Monitor heart rate and gastrointestinal tolerance, and titrate galantamine slowly. Reduce the galantamine dose if bradycardia or marked adverse effects occur.
