Summary
Fluoroquinolones carry a risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture, and systemic corticosteroids increase that risk. Risk is greater in older patients, in transplant recipients and with long-term steroid exposure. Absorption from intra-articular or depot injection may contribute, particularly near tendons.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gemifloxacin and Triamcinolone acetonide injectable can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic tendon toxicity; corticosteroids impair collagen synthesis and tendon repair.
What to do
Avoid the combination in older patients and in those with prior tendon disorders where an alternative antibiotic is possible. Stop gemifloxacin and rest the limb if tendon pain or swelling develops.
