Summary
Systemic corticosteroids such as prednisone raise blood glucose by promoting hepatic gluconeogenesis and insulin resistance. This can weaken the glucose-lowering effect of glipizide and metformin and lead to loss of glycemic control, especially during higher-dose or prolonged courses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glipizide-metformin and Prednisone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Glipizide-metformin belongs to Endocrine; Prednisone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism through glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance and increased hepatic glucose output.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose more frequently when starting, changing or stopping prednisone, and increase the antidiabetic doses as needed. Reduce doses again when the steroid is tapered to avoid hypoglycemia.
