For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Mifepristone is a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist and can blunt the effect of corticosteroids. In patients on long-term corticosteroids this may precipitate adrenal insufficiency or loss of disease control, and labeling for the abortion indication lists chronic corticosteroid therapy as a contraindication.

What this interaction means in plain words

Mifepristone and Prednisone are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Mifepristone belongs to Endocrine; Prednisone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Mifepristone antagonizes glucocorticoid receptors, opposing the effect of prednisone.

What to do

Do not use mifepristone in patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy. If a patient needs both, an alternative strategy should be selected by a specialist, since usual steroid doses may be ineffective.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
