Summary
Guanfacine, a central alpha-2 agonist, may blunt the adrenergic warning symptoms of hypoglycemia such as tachycardia and tremor. A patient on nateglinide may therefore be less aware of falling blood glucose, although sweating is usually preserved.
What this interaction means in plain words
Guanfacine and Nateglinide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Guanfacine belongs to Cardiovascular; Nateglinide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Reduced sympathetic outflow from central alpha-2 stimulation dampens the catecholamine-mediated symptoms of hypoglycemia.
What to do
Advise patients to monitor blood glucose rather than rely on symptoms, especially when meals are irregular.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
