Summary

Henbane contains tropane anticholinergic alkaloids such as hyoscyamine and scopolamine. They oppose the muscarinic effects of succinylcholine, such as bradycardia, and have little effect on neuromuscular blockade. The anticholinergic burden may add to tachycardia and confusion in the perioperative setting.

What this interaction means in plain words

Henbane and Succinylcholine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Muscarinic receptor blockade by tropane alkaloids counteracts the muscarinic effects of succinylcholine.

What to do

Ask about herbal use before surgery and stop henbane preparations beforehand. Monitor heart rate and watch for anticholinergic toxicity.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
  • Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
