Summary
Quinine is partly cleared renally and thiazides may slightly raise levels through tubular competition. More relevant, thiazide-induced hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia can increase quinine's QT-prolonging risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan and Quinine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide-losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Quinine belongs to Anti Parasitic.
Why it happens
Possible tubular secretion competition; electrolyte depletion adds to QT prolongation.
What to do
Check and correct potassium and magnesium before and during quinine therapy, and obtain an ECG if other QT-prolonging drugs are used.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
