Summary

Hydrochlorothiazide and probenecid are both secreted by renal organic anion transporters, and probenecid can reduce thiazide tubular secretion. Thiazides also raise serum uric acid, opposing the uricosuric effect of probenecid.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Probenecid have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Probenecid belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Competition for renal tubular organic anion secretion and thiazide-induced hyperuricemia opposing uricosuria.

What to do

Monitor serum uric acid and gout control. Adjust the probenecid dose or consider an alternative diuretic if efficacy is reduced.
