Summary
Hydroxyurea can blunt the response to live varicella vaccine. In immunocompromised patients the vaccine virus may also disseminate and cause serious varicella-like disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydroxycarbamide and Varicella virus vaccine live can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Why it happens
Drug-related immunosuppression lowers vaccine immunogenicity and permits replication of the live attenuated virus.
What to do
Avoid live varicella vaccination during hydroxyurea therapy. Vaccinate before starting treatment when possible, or defer it according to the specialist's assessment of immune status.
