Summary
Ibutilide strongly prolongs the QT interval and commonly causes torsades de pointes. Adding lapatinib, which also prolongs QT, further raises this risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ibutilide and Lapatinib are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Ibutilide belongs to Cardiovascular; Lapatinib belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation.
What to do
Avoid the combination. Choose another rhythm-control strategy, such as electrical cardioversion, in patients taking lapatinib.
