Summary
Imatinib inhibits CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, enzymes involved in imipramine and desipramine metabolism, so tricyclic concentrations may rise. This may cause greater anticholinergic effects, sedation, hypotension or cardiac conduction abnormalities.
What this interaction means in plain words
Imatinib and Imipramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Imatinib belongs to Oncology; Imipramine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Inhibition of CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 by imatinib, reducing imipramine clearance.
What to do
Monitor for tricyclic toxicity and ECG changes, and reduce the imipramine dose if needed. Consider tricyclic plasma level monitoring.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?

Frequently asked questions
Can I take Imatinib with Imipramine?
MediHelp rates the interaction as moderate. Imatinib and Imipramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken. This may cause greater anticholinergic effects, sedation, hypotension or cardiac conduction abnormalities.
How serious is the interaction between Imatinib and Imipramine?
MediHelp rates it moderate, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor for tricyclic toxicity and ECG changes, and reduce the imipramine dose if needed. Consider tricyclic plasma level monitoring.
What other medicines interact with Imipramine?
