Summary
Both agents lower blood pressure, so combined use can produce additive hypotension. Angiotensin receptor blockers raise potassium, and beta-blockers may slightly impair potassium handling. Irbesartan is also contraindicated in pregnancy because of fetal toxicity, which is independent of timolol.
What this interaction means in plain words
Irbesartan and Timolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Irbesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Timolol belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive antihypertensive effects, plus ARB-related potassium retention with minor beta-blocker contribution.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and serum potassium, particularly in renal impairment or with other potassium-raising drugs. Confirm that women of childbearing potential are not pregnant and use effective contraception.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
