Summary

Both agents can prolong the QT interval. Given together during anesthesia, they may raise the risk of torsades de pointes, especially with electrolyte disturbance. Quinidine may also potentiate neuromuscular blockade and cause hypotension.

What this interaction means in plain words

Isoflurane and Quinidine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Isoflurane belongs to Central Nervous System; Quinidine belongs to Anti Parasitic.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive prolongation of cardiac repolarization through effects on potassium channels.

What to do

Review the baseline QTc and correct potassium and magnesium before anesthesia. Monitor the ECG continuously during surgery, and use neuromuscular monitoring if a blocker is given.

What to ask your pharmacist
