Summary
NSAIDs can weaken the blood pressure-lowering effect of angiotensin receptor blockers. In older, volume-depleted or renally impaired patients the combination can cause acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ketoprofen and Valsartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ketoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins reduces glomerular perfusion, which combined with ARB efferent arteriolar dilation lowers filtration and impairs potassium excretion.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting and during therapy. Avoid prolonged use, particularly in elderly patients or those with CKD.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
