Summary

Nonselective MAO inhibition prevents breakdown of dopamine and noradrenaline formed from levodopa. This can cause hypertensive crisis, flushing, and severe headache.

What this interaction means in plain words

Levodopa and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Levodopa belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition lets catecholamines derived from levodopa accumulate, producing an exaggerated pressor response.

What to do

Avoid concurrent use and keep a washout interval of at least 14 days after stopping procarbazine. If a Parkinson's patient needs procarbazine, review options with the oncology and neurology teams.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
