Summary
Fluoroquinolones can cause hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia in patients on insulin secretagogues. Nateglinide stimulates insulin release, so hypoglycemia may be more likely.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levofloxacin and Nateglinide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Nateglinide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Fluoroquinolones alter beta-cell insulin release, which may add to the secretagogue effect of nateglinide.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose closely during the antibiotic course and teach the patient to recognize hypoglycemia. Reduce the nateglinide dose if low glucose occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
