Summary
Fluoroquinolones and systemic corticosteroids each raise the risk of tendinopathy, and together the risk of tendon inflammation and rupture, notably of the Achilles tendon, is greater. Older patients and those with renal impairment or transplants are at highest risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levofloxacin and Triamcinolone can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Triamcinolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic tendon toxicity, with both drugs impairing tenocyte function and collagen integrity.
What to do
Where possible choose a non-fluoroquinolone antibiotic in patients receiving corticosteroids, especially older adults. Stop levofloxacin and rest the limb at the first sign of tendon pain or swelling.
What to ask your pharmacist
