Summary
Barbiturates induce hepatic enzymes and may increase lidocaine metabolism, lowering its plasma levels and possibly reducing antiarrhythmic effect. Additive CNS depression is also possible with systemic lidocaine.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lidocaine and Secobarbital can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Lidocaine belongs to Cardiovascular; Secobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Barbiturate-mediated induction of hepatic CYP enzymes (including CYP3A4 and CYP1A2) increases lidocaine clearance; additive CNS depression.
What to do
Monitor lidocaine response and plasma levels when used systemically and adjust the dose as needed; watch for excess sedation.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
