Summary
Systemic lidocaine can add to the sedative and respiratory depressant effects of sufentanil, a very potent opioid. Sufentanil is also a CYP3A4 substrate, so a small rise in exposure is conceivable. The combination is common in anesthesia and needs monitoring.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lidocaine and Sufentanil can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Lidocaine belongs to Cardiovascular; Sufentanil belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive CNS and respiratory depression; weak CYP3A4 inhibition by lidocaine may slightly raise sufentanil levels.
What to do
Monitor sedation, oxygen saturation and respiratory rate, and reduce the opioid dose when giving systemic lidocaine.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
