Summary
Baclofen and opioids both depress the central nervous system, and sufentanil is a very potent opioid. Together they can cause profound sedation, hypotension and respiratory depression, and intrathecal baclofen adds particular risk in the perioperative setting.
What this interaction means in plain words
Baclofen and Sufentanil can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Baclofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Sufentanil belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive CNS and respiratory depression from opioid mu-receptor agonism and baclofen GABA-B agonism.
What to do
Use reduced opioid doses and monitor respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and level of consciousness, with naloxone available. Continuous monitoring is advisable after sufentanil administration.
What to ask your pharmacist
