Summary

Lorcaserin is a serotonin 5-HT2C agonist, and combining it with a serotonergic antipsychotic may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Lorcaserin has been withdrawn from the US market, which limits current relevance. Serotonin 5-HT2C agonism may also oppose the effects of lurasidone.

What this interaction means in plain words

Lorcaserin and Lurasidone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive serotonergic effects with possible pharmacodynamic opposition at 5-HT2C and dopamine pathways.

What to do

Monitor for signs of serotonin syndrome such as agitation, tremor, hyperthermia and clonus, or neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Consider an alternative to lorcaserin if symptoms occur.
