For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Atazanavir, a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor (especially when boosted), markedly increases lurasidone exposure. Lurasidone labeling contraindicates concurrent use with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors because of risk of excessive adverse effects such as akathisia, sedation and extrapyramidal symptoms.

What this interaction means in plain words

Atazanavir and Lurasidone are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Atazanavir belongs to Anti Virals; Lurasidone belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Atazanavir inhibits CYP3A4, the main metabolic pathway of lurasidone.

What to do

Avoid the combination; choose an antipsychotic less dependent on CYP3A4 or an alternative antiretroviral.

What to ask your pharmacist
